How to Make Your Own Chalk Paint

Do you need a fun idea for all the leftover bits and pieces of sidewalk chalk that are too small to use? I do! We have a whole chalk bucket overflowing with little chalk pieces. So what if we turn all those little chalk pieces into chalk paint? Follow along to see how we made our own chalk paint and then give it a try yourself. It was definitely a hit with my kiddos!

Supplies Needed to Make Chalk Paint

How to Make Chalk Paint

1. First, sort all of the small broken chalk pieces by color.

My 2 year old is still learning her colors so this was her job. We used 6 Tupperware bowls to separate colors into and she would call the colors out as she found them. I love incorporating learning into any playtime we do, so this was a good way to practice her color recognition. See the picture below of all our chalk sorted by color.

2. Next, place each set of colored chalk into a sandwich size ziplock bag.

3. Then place each of the sandwich ziplock bags into another freezer gallon sized ziplock bag. I double bagged the chalk like this so that if one of the bags busts in the next step then there would be a second bag to keep the chalk powder from spilling out. I definitely recommend this step because we had several of our inside bags pop. Check out the picture below to see how we double bagged the chalk.

4. Next, used a rubber mallet to hammer the bags and crush the chalk pieces into a fine powder.

5. Repeat step 4 for all the different colored bags of chalk.

6. Now you can pour each of your colored crushed chalk into a muffin tin. For this step, we poured each individual color into its own compartment in the muffin tin.

7. Then in the other compartments we mixed the different colors together to make a lot of different shades of colors.

7. Then, mix in water a little bit at a time and use the paintbrushes to stir and create a paint consistency. The paint should look similar to the yellow paint that I’m stirring in the second picture below. I suggest to slowly add about a tablespoon of water at a time until the powder is fully wet but not super runny. I found that if you add too much water then the paint is too watery and doesn’t show up very well.

8. Then have a blast painting a masterpiece in your driveway
