How to Make Lovebugs Using a Recycled Egg Carton

Are you looking for a cute Valentine’s Day craft? Well I’ve got a super cute lovebug craft for you and it even uses a recycled egg carton! I love it when my crafts can utilize recycled material to help cut back on trash production. So go grab your empty egg carton and follow along to see how to make these adorable lovebugs.

Supplies Needed to Make a Lovebug Craft:

  • Empty egg carton – we recommend the cardboard egg cartons so that the paint adheres to them best
  • Washable paint – We used typical Valentine colors like pink, red, and white
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors

  • Googly eyes
  • Pipe cleaners – We recommend these glittery pipe cleaners. Their color goes perfectly with this lovebug craft
  • String

How to Make a Lovebug Craft:

1. Grab the egg carton and cut it into sections of three egg holders. See the picture below for reference.

2. Cut off any jagged edges to make a rounded center body and scalloped edged wings on the outer two egg holders. See the picture below for reference.

3 Paint the lovebug and allow it to dry. For best results, paint the center body one color and the outer wings a different color.

4. Add two googly eyes onto the lovebug craft and draw on a smile. See the picture below for reference.

5. Cut a pipe cleaner in half and bend one of the halves in half to create antennas. You can twist the antennas around a pencil to make the antennas spiraled or just leave them straight.

6. Put a dot of hot glue on the top of the lovebugs head. See the picture below for reference.

7. Press the antennas into the hot glue and hold in place until the hot glue is hardened. See picture below for reference

8. Optional step: You can go even further and attach a piece of string to the top of the lovebugs. Then you can hang the lovebugs from a light fixture to make the lovebugs look like they’re flying and use them as a sweet Valentine decoration. See the picture below for reference.
