What you’ll need:
- Watercolor paper – I’ve linked my favorite watercolor paper below
- Sharpies
- Scissors
- Aluminum foil
- Washable markers – This washable marker set with 100 different colors that’s linked below would be perfect for this craft!
- Spray bottle
How to make Tie Dye Easter Eggs:
- First use the Sharpie to draw an egg shape on the watercolor paper
- Then cut the egg shape out
- Next, use the Sharpie to draw cool designs all over the egg. See the picture below for my egg design. A permanent marker, like a Sharpie, must be used for this step. Permanent markers are not water soluble. So when the paper gets wet in later steps, the permanent marker designs will not run on the paper.
- Then take a sheet of aluminum foil and lay the egg on top. Trace around the egg onto the aluminum foil. This gives you a guide for how large your egg shape is.
- On the aluminum foil, color the whole egg shape with washable markers. See the picture below for reference. You must use washable markers for this step. Washable markers ARE water soluble. So when they get wet in later steps then the colors will run creating the tie dye effect that we want.
- Use the water spray bottle to spray the colored aluminum foil
- Then take you egg design and flip it over to press the face of the drawing onto the wet aluminum foil and rub the whole back side of the egg
- Then peel the egg paper off to reveal a really cool tie dye Easter egg.
- Allow the paper to fully dry and then display your Easter eggs for everyone to see!
My kids thought this was the coolest thing ever and kept making more and more Easter eggs. Below I have linked our Instagram video showing how I created these tie dye Easter eggs if you are interested in seeing that, as well.
