So my son and daughter recently turned 7 and 9 years old! They both have the same birthday just 2 years apart. So, while they don’t care, I’ve always done a dual birthday party for the two of them. This year they wanted a slip n slide party with a piñata. We couldn’t find a piñata that they both liked. So I thought, why not make one for them? They both agreed that they wanted a piece of pizza wearing sunglasses and a mustache hahaha. I figured I may be able to make that. Follow along and see how I made our own piñata!

How to Make Your Own Piñata

1. First, sketch out the piñata design that you would like to create. We decided to make a pizza piñata wearing sunglasses and a mustache.

2. Next, lay the cardboard out and sketch out the shape of the piñata. The pizza shape was an easy choice for me because it’s literally a triangle.

3. Use the box cutters to carefully cut out the piñata shape. Check out the picture below to see me cutting out triangle out.

4. Remember that piñatas are 3-D shapes. So you’re going to need a front and a back and sides. So take your front cut out that you just made and place it on top of another piece of cardboard and trace it to make the exact same shape.

5. Use the box cutters to cut out the back piece.

6. Then to make the side pieces, cut strips of cardboard that are about 4 inches wide. This will have to wrap around all of the sides, so cut a few strips. Check out the picture below showing all of our cardboard pieces.

7. Now start assembling your piñata by duct taping the front piece to the sides pieces.

9. Next cut a little flap on the side to insert candy or prizes though.

8. Before you add on the back piece, make your handle at the top of the piñata. Poke two holes through the piñata side and string the zip tie through it.

10. Then line up the back piece and duct tape all around the edges. Check out the picture below to see our final 3-D piñata.

11. Now you can start preparing the tissue paper by cutting 2 inch wide strips of tissue paper.

12. Then cut little snips along the strip of tissue paper to create the fringe. Check out the picture below to see how our fringe turned out.

13. Next glue the strips of tissue paper to the piñata using the glue stick. Start at the bottom of the piñata gluing strip one by one as you move up the piñata to cover the entire piñata.

14. Switch between colors of tissue paper to create the design you desire. For mine, I applied yellow to the front of the pizza with a small strip of brown for the crust. The back and sides were also brown for the crust.

15. Next, cut out any embellishments from the tissue paper and glue them to the piñata. For our pizza piñata, we cut out red pepperonis, black sunglasses, and a black mustache to glue onto the face of the piñata. Check out our final pizza piñata below!

16. Lastly, attach a rope to the zip tie, fill it with candy and prizes, and hang it from a tree to play a game of piñata.
