So I’ve been seeing all the DIY ghost decorations made out of cheesecloth and fabric stiffener that people have been making lately for Halloween decor. I loved this idea so much but wanted to turn that concept into a more simple kids craft. So I grabbed some coffee filters, glue, and my kids and we got to work creating a super cute ghost garland. Follow along to see how we made our DIY ghost garland!

Supplies Needed to Make the Ghost Garland
You can click on each supply item below to see the exact product that we recommend and make a purchase if you want!
- Elmers glue
- Coffee filters
- Surface protection (we used a recycled plastic bag to protect our table from excess glue)
- Foam paintbrush
- Dot markers (or something to rest your wet coffee filters on that has a rounded top. You could probably use an empty toilet paper roll with a ball resting on top of it)
- Markers – These dual tip markers are my favorite! They have a larger tip on one end and a fine tip on the other end which is perfect for all types of designs.
- Needle
- White thread
How to Make the Ghost Garland
- First, flatten out the coffee filter and lay it onto a protected surface. I laid my filter onto of a recycled plastic bag.
2. Pour the Elmer’s glue onto a paper plate.
3. Use the foam paint brush to paint the glue all over the coffee filter.
4. Next, drape the glue coffee filter over a rounded tube to create a ghost shape. We draped ours over our dot makers that have a round ball-like lid.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 to create as many ghosts as you’d like for your ghost garland.
6. Allow the glue coffee filters to dry overnight.
7. Once dry, lift the hardened coffee filter off of the drying tube. The glue coffee filters should be hardened into the shape you left it in.
8. Next, draw cute ghost faces onto the dried coffee filters.
9. Use the needle and thread to poke through each of the ghosts heads to create the ghost garland.
10. Then tie the ghost garland wherever you’d like to display the garland. We tied our garland onto the light pendants in our kitchen.
